Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It is a paddle sport for all ages and all athletic ability levels played on a court with two, three, or four players use hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. The CRAF Center offers leagues and indoor courts are available every day. The leagues include morning and evening opportunities with championship games on a regular basis.
The Houghton Lake Resorter has followed the game's popularity at the CRAF Center from the beginning. In their first pickleball article in April 2016, the game had already caught on. At that time, they stated "over 50 “picklers” have signed up to be on the center’s pickleball email list and there have been days when reservations for courts have been booked."
The CRAF Center manager, Pat Riss, talked about the advantages of the pickleball email list mentioned in the article. "She said those who enjoy playing pickleball use the list as a resource to find players of a similar skill level. Each person on the list has rated their playing ability and provided contact information so others of similar levels can contact one another to play. Riss said being able to play with others of the same skill level seems to make the game more enjoyable. She said it matches beginners with fellow beginners and the more experienced can play with other seasoned players." *
The first league championships were held in December 2016 and continue twice a year. In addition to the fun, friendships, and the benefits of physical exercise, winners take home a hotly contested trophy atop a jar of pickles.
Pickleball workshops and orientations are offered by the CRAF Center. To join a league, reserve a court, or join the email list, please contact the us at: 989-275-4975.
